Lee Colan, Ph.D. on Engaging the Hearts and Minds of Your Employees

On Wednesday, January 25, 2018, Lee J. Colan, Ph.D., leadership and employee engagement expert and author of 14 leadership books including Engaging the Hearts and Minds of All Your Employees visited Wake Forest School of Business at the invitation of the Allegacy Center for Leadership and Character. Colan spoke to the Wake Forest Athletics coaches and staff in a dynamic breakfast session then spoke in 3 undergraduate courses (BEM318 and MIL124) and 2 graduate courses (MSBA) followed by a leadership colloquium on how to consistently execute your plans by practicing adherence.

In the classroom sessions, enthusiastically sharing the message of how to ignite passionate performance for better business results, Dr. Colan explored concepts including the mental and emotional sides of employee engagement including how engaged minds and engaged hearts lead to passionate performance. This reinforces the customer value chain of shareholder value, loyal customers, engaged employees, and engaging leaders. With a series of practical, actionable steps anchored in servant leadership, Dr. Colan illustrated the impact of clear communication and deep appreciation in the workplace.

In the leadership colloquium, Dr. Colan drew from his book, Sticking to It: The Art of Adherence to illustrate the “adherence equation” composed of focus, competence, and passion. Focus includes strategy and crafting the “one thing” with clear purpose to propel your team forward. Competence requires clear goals and consistent execution toward the “one thing” of importance your team is working toward. Passion involves engaging your employees and inviting them to see where they contribute to the larger plan as well as reinforcing the importance of each member’s contribution. When leaders demonstrate adherence, the impact on the team and organization will improve and be sustained.
