On Monday, February 26, 2018, the Allegacy Center for Leadership and Character hosted a visit from Kevin Tanner, President, Chief Investment Officer, and Chief Financial Officer for Saratoga Research & Investment Management. While visiting with a class of 59 MSBA students, his message was for students to see themselves as leaders rather than as analysts. Tanner provided ideas on how to deliver strong leadership guidance and direction within an organization through using team coaching approaches. As well, Tanner discussed his leadership journey with building his firm over the past 20 years.
With the MIL124 class including 45 students, Tanner made numerous connections between leading a company and leading an athletics team including the idea that both require a plan for building toward the future and patience with a timeline for both short and long term success.
During a lunch session with 35 leaders from Wake Forest Athletics, Tanner broadened the discussion to explore the importance of trust in organizations and in hiring practices. He gave the advice to hire people smarter than you who are team players and who have leadership capabilities. When you hire the right, talented people, you end up with people who help to better everyone’s game.
