The Spirit of Service: The ACLC and Business School Delivers Comfort and Supplies to Winston-Salem Families

The fall has been a time of service for the ACLC, faculty staff and students in the business school.

Service began with the assembly of bed kits on the terrace, in partnership with A Bed and A Book—a local Winston-Salem organization that aims to provide all children with a soft place to dream. Undergrad students in two of Dr Douglas Johnson’s MSM classes kicked the day off, followed by faculty, staff and friends from Allegacy Federal Credit Union. At the end of the day, 34 bed kits had been assembled for future deliveries.

Throughout the month, volunteers have also had opportunities to deliver and assemble these beds to homes in and around Winston-Salem. These engagement opportunities allow volunteers to interact with families and witness the excitement of children who may have never had a bed to call their own.

According to Founder and Executive Director of A Bed and a Book, Anneliese Wall, 2-3% of our population experience “bedlessness.” Providing a soft and safe place for children to dream, supports the ability to learn and thrive at school while boosting self confidence and pride.

A school supply drive has also been running during this month of giving in support of Cook Elementary. Cook Elementary, located just under three miles from WFU campus, and all schools in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, have suffered from a shortage of supplies, budget cuts, and staff reductions due to ongoing budget issues.

Items such as copy paper, dry erase markers, playground equipment and incentive items were collected and delivered on November 21st. The Demon Deacon helped with the delivery and visited each classroom for high fives and pictures with students and teachers.

The ACLC appreciates the support it has received from the Business School and is excited to further advance the spirit of pro humanitate in the coming year.
