Falling into Service: A Lot to Learn by Giving Back

Invaluable learning experiences often take place beyond the traditional classroom walls when a group comes together to serve others. Wednesday, students from Dr. Johnson’s Managing People and Organizations course, faculty, staff, and the Allegacy Financial Center for Leadership took part in a hands-on service project building beds for local families in need. The initiative highlighted the real-world application of leadership, teamwork, and social responsibility.

Anneliese Wall, Founder of the local nonprofit A Bed and A Book, shared a sobering reality with the team: roughly 2 to 3 percent of people in our community lack a bed of their own. For many children, that means sleeping on floors night after night. Currently, the waitlist at A Bed and A Book spans more than 100 children.

Thanks to the hard work and coordination of today’s volunteers, 30 bed kits were fully constructed. In the coming weeks, these beds will be delivered directly to local homes, along with mattresses, linens, and books.

A dedicated bed is more than just furniture—it gives a child a soft place to dream and restorative sleep required to thrive in school and in life.
