Reflections from Naval Academy Leadership Conference Attendee Tyler Boucher

Tyler Boucher, BEM major ’19 attended the 2018 Naval Academy Leadership Conference and returned with six key ingredients that make up a great leader. These insights he drew from many sessions with the conference presenters including Steve Reinemund, former CEO of Pepsico, and former dean of the Wake Forest School of Business. The six major themes include:

  1. Character. People want to follow those with good character. This includes people who demonstrate their good character by making a positive impact on others.
  2. Compassion. Show you care and others will be more open to your thoughts and direction. This connects you to the people around you.
  3. Preparation. Give thought to your planning. As much as you prepare is as good as you’re going to do. Preparation is always worthwhile.
  4. Ownership. Be accountable for your own actions and hold others accountable for theirs. Recognize successes and be willing to work through challenges.
  5. Hunger to Improve. Always be striving to get better and to find ways to improve. Make this a passion and a commitment.
  6. Authenticity. Find your own style and demonstrate it. This will make you real to others and will allow you to express your true leadership ability.

Boucher reinforced how impactful the messages were and how he is inspired to continue enhancing his leadership experience and being a positive influence to others.
