School of Business ‘pro humanitate’ breakfast: leadership through service

On Tuesday, June 24th staff and faculty colleagues of the WFU School of Business gathered for a breakfast to recognize and celebrate its service over the past year, in the spirit of the University’s motto, pro humanitate (“for humanity”) and reflect on the importance of community service.

A slide presentation was shown, highlighting several of the numerous service-focused initiatives  that occurred over the last academic year.  Many of these events were supported by volunteers from  student, faculty and staff populations, involved hundreds of hours of community service and  raised dozens of thousands of dollars for local and national causes.

Dr. Pat Sweeney shared remarks about the alignment of the University’s motto and the mission of  the business school.  In these remarks he said, “One of the most powerful means to develop  ethical business leaders, who are dedicated to serving humanity, is to set the example by having  faculty and staff participating in service engagements with students. These joint service  engagements provide us (faculty and staff) with an opportunity to live our values of serving  humanity and demonstrating integrity, and provide us an opportunity to inspire students, which  fall under inspirational and ethical leadership in our guiding framework.”

Wake Forest’s mission of educating the whole person, graduating students who seek purpose-filled lives while building a community dedicated to serving humanity is the spirit of pro humanitate.

“Furthermore, community service enhances our sense of humility and personal responsibility and brings honor to each individual and Wake Forest. Thus, community service enriches our character,” added Dr. Sweeney.

This event was co-sponsored by the Allegacy Center for Leadership and Character and School of Business Administration.
